Improving the security of your home can be as simple as locking all doors and windows when you leave the house or turn in for the night. Incredible as it sounds; people still neglect to do this. If you leave the house in the day and only plan to return home after dark, it's a good idea to leave a few lights on indoors to make it look like someone's home. Stop delivery of newspapers and mail while you're away. This contributes to the effect that your house isn't empty. Where possible, ask friends, relatives or neighbors to keep an eye on your home security by dropping by for a few hours when they can to give the impression the house is occupied.
