The Marina Bay Street Circuit held the first ever night race in the history of Formula One on September 28, 2008. This is one of the few tracks running in the counterclockwise direction with some high speed sections like the Raffles Boulevard where the cars can go in excess of 300 kmph. The Esplanade Drive where speeds can be anywhere between 250 kmph and 300 kmph is also another hot spot for overtaking. The track comprises of some demanding corners with turn 10 - also known as the "Singapore Sling" after a cocktail invented by a bartender named Ngiam Tong Boon - being one of the few slowest corners on the track. The track is very bumpy in nature with its high kerbs making it very difficult for the drivers, taking into consideration the hot and humid weather conditions. One of the most unique facts of the Singapore track is that, in order to power the 1600 light projectors surrounding the circuit, an estimated 108 power cables - each one measuring 423 metres in length - are used to connect 12 twin-power generators. The 2008 Singapore GP was high on drama with Alonso winning the race after the exit of his teammate Nelson Piquet Jr. in a strange manner after he qualified 15th on the grid. This marked the first win of the season for the Spaniard.

It promises to be an exciting Singapore Grand Prix with Alonso securing back to back pole positions. Most would have expected Vettel to take pole after his dominance in practice, but it wasn't to be. Vettel only managed to set the second fastest time. The two McLarens of Hamilton and Button are closely behind in 3rd and 4th. Championship leader Mark Webber starts from a disappointing 5th, after setting a qualifying time of only 3 hundredths slower than Button.

Red Bull are not as dominant as initially feared, and it seems that Alonso's Ferrari and the two McLarens should be able to match them for pace in the race. With the championship so close, we couldn't have asked for a better starting grid. The top 5 grid positions are almost in reverse order of their championship positions!

Massa will start from the back of the grid after dropping out of qualifying due to engine issues. And Nico Hulkenberg has been penalized 5 grid positions for changing his gearbox and will start from 17th.It promises to be an exciting race. Do join us for the race at 12:00 GMT on Sunday.
