Six steps to going green

The increase in awareness of environmental and ecological issues

, means recycling is something that everyone and every business is now considering.

But how much effort are you putting in to doing your bit? How many times do you put recyclable items straight in the dustbin?

Both at home and at work, we could all make a big difference through only a little extra effort.

1. DRINK TAP WATER

The bottled water industry uses close to 3 million tonnes of plastic for packaging, so switch to tap water and save your planet and your wallet in one go!

2. CLOSE THE FRIDGE

Don't leave the fridge door open for longer than necessary. If you can, decide what you're going in for before you open the door. Otherwise, the cool air will escape and the fridge will then have to work harder to re-cool it.

3. DON'T BE A MUG

In the workplace, swap polystyrene and plastic cups for glasses and mugs. But don't over do it with the washing up. In other words, only use the water and washing up liquid that you need. Nothing more.

4. ENERGY SAVING LIGHT BULBS

Energy saving light bulbs are now the norm and by using them, you'll be using just 20 per cent of the electricity of a regular one. Plus, it will last you much, much longer.

5. RECYCLING BAGS

Recycle paper, glass, batteries, plastic bottles, and garden waste. You may have containers and bins already, which you can use. Alternatively, why not buy some kerbside recycling bags?

6. SHOP SENSIBLE

Think about how many times in a week you visit the local shops or supermarket. Now think about what you buy from them. You could save money and help the environment by making less journeys, so think about what you buy in bulk or what you buy at the start of the week that will last you until your next weekly shop.

Maybe you can boost your green credentials by investing in some recycling bags or garden waste bags.
