The first snow falls on the Alps herald the return of Ski Sunday and its instantly recognizable theme music to the televisions of Great Britain. In a non Olympic year, the focus for competitors is very much on scoring points on the peaks and slopes of Europe in a bid to be crowned winner of the annual World Cup series. As always, the main attention will be on the downhill, the giant slalom, the super giant slalom and the combined disciplines. There is the promise of a fascinating battle in both the women's and the men's category; for the men, Carlo Janka, Erik Guay, and Benjamin Raich go head to head, whilst Lindsey Vonn, and the German pair Kathrin Hoelzl and Maria Riesch will be fighting for supremacy for the ladies.

One of the more thrilling aspects for spectators is the ability of these highly trained athletes to ride their skis to the very edge of control, wringing tenths of seconds out of the turns and jumps. Of course, even such skilled individuals lose control at times; crashes are relatively common, and as with any high performance sport, form part of the appeal for fans. As with cycling, one of the joys of ski-ing is that ordinary people are able to emulate the professionals and pit themselves on the same runs.

This does, however, carry its own level of danger, and a big crash high up on a mountain is often more serious and costly than a normally holiday injury. For this reason, then, it's important to have the right coverage; dedicated winter sports travel insurance is necessary for any individual planning to hit the slopes this winter. Even the very best have accidents indeed, without the element of risk, the sport would likely not be as appealing to the thousands giving themselves over to the forces of gravity each year.

Only time will tell who comes out on top this year, but what is sure is that the race for the prize will have as many thrills and spills as a beginners' ski-ing class.
