Skid Steer Snow Attachment Care And Maintenance

A snow attachment will often get overlooked and neglected in its off season

, because it's hard to clean and care for something when it is so cold. Even construction and landscaping professionals have been known to ignore the upkeep of their equipment. It is not uncommon in this part of the country to see snow attachments sitting out in a yard, sinking into the driveway, and covered with snow. And rust. Who knows how long those have been sitting out there?

Most good-quality construction equipment is built tough enough to take significant amounts of abuse on the job. But there is really no excuse for leaving a working vehicle or snow attachment to the mercy of the elements, especially during the winter months. Especially when a tarp only costs ten dollars.

The skid steer snow attachment is no different. In fact, if a skid steer owner is smart enough to buy one of the most useful machines on the planet, then it most likely follows that he or she is smart enough to know how to care for it. In addition to regular repairs and scheduled maintenance, though, it is truly wise for skid steer snow equipment owners to come up with a good way to store their equipment during the times when it is not being used. Especially if that skid steer equipment will be needed in the not-too-distant future to help earn some money.

To store a skid steer snow attachment, there are a few things to keep in mind. Most attachments are made of steel, and even with a healthy coating of rust-resistant paint, salt crystals and residue can ruin machinery of any kind if they are left unattended. Water, wherever it comes from, can speed up the oxidation process on unprotected equipment. But so can corrosive chemicals that are found in any construction environment, and mud is a perfect way to apply water to metal parts and keep it there indefinitely.

So make a point of washing down and drying off the skid steer and every snow attachment after a job, especially if it was involved in spreading road salt. And avoid leaving any skid steer vehicle and snow attachment uncovered in the weather. Find a way to bring that precious gear under a roof. If that is not going to be possible though, a good quality tarp or other waterproof covering will do the simple job of keeping rain and melting snow or ice off of the snow attachment. If it is possible to find a building to store these machines in, dust can also be a culprit if the equipment stands unused for any appreciable length of time. The skid steer loader itself as well as the skid steer attachment operates under hydraulic power. Hydraulic oils and dust are a really not a good combination. Dust can penetrate the seals and make a very messy situation, so a good tarp needs to be a part of the snow attachment protection plan.

Water can also be found standing on the ground, indoors or out, so if there is the possibility that a snow attachment might spend time resting in a puddle, it's better to get it off of the ground. A concrete block, brick, or even a few inches of a 4" X 4" block of wood under each corner will do the job. Just make sure it will not tip over onto anything or anyone.

Also, consider that the skid steer snow attachment that does double-duty in other circumstances, like the salt-, sand-, seed-spreader. There is greater return on an investment when a snow attachment is actually in use and not in storage.
