Skin Changes Over Your Lifetime
Every human being has to accept that skin is one of the awesome gifts from god
, which happens to be the largest organ of human being. Without this outer layer, we can't imagine a person's appearance. The total surface area of skin for a normal man happens to be 2 square yards and it weighs up to 6 to 9 pounds. Suppose if we are devoid of skin guess what would happen? This seems to be a very good question; and the answer is that, muscles, bones and other organs will be swinging freely. This evasive layer safeguards the underlying muscles, ligaments and the other internal organs, and protects from dust, pollution and hence care should be taken to treasure this invaluable gift.
The appearance of the skin may change, depending on personal stress, hormonal problem and environment in which we live. One would like to know the basic structure and the composition of skin. The skin is made up of components such as water, lipids, protein, vitamins, minerals and chemicals. Skin is a combination of layers; they are epidermis, dermis and hypodermis (subcutaneous), which happens to be outer layer, middle and inner layer respectively.
The skin that you see is the epidermis, beneath this layer, thousands of new skin cells are created every minute. When these cells are completely built, they start moving towards the top of the epidermis. As they move top, the existing older cells which are above the newer one, start dying and they move to the surface of the skin.
One might be surprised to know that the skin that we see are the dead cells. This process of cell creation and extinction happens in a span of two to four weeks time. Almost 95% of the cells in epidermis are involved in creation of new cells, while the remaining are involved in creation of melanin, which is responsible for the color of the skin. Generally dark skins have more melanin which protect from the harmful rays of the sun.
Dermis consist of nerve endings, blood vessels, sweat and oil glands. The nerve endings are responsible for sensation while the blood vessels supply oxygen and nutrients to the skin. Oil glands produce sebum, which is skin's natural oil, that moisturizes the skin. The skin remains water proof as long as the oil content is there on the skin, thus essential nutrients are not washed out from our body.
Sweat glands are responsible for sweating which is helpful in maintaining the temperature of the body. When the sweat and oily sebum meets, they form protective layer over the skin which is quite sticky in nature. The inner hypodermis layer is made up of fats and this layer is used to absorb shock and keeps the body warm. The root of the hair starts from this layer. The hair roots to a small spherical tube called the follicle. The sebaceous gland in the dermis layer secrets the oily sebum which gives shine to the hair. The hair follicles are present in all parts of the body except lips, palms and sole of the feet.
As this articles suggests, skin is a very complex organ made up of many things. Your skin needs to be maintained and treated to keep it in top condition.
