Skin Irregularities Are A Problematic But Not Deadly Complication Of Liposuction
It sounds like a wonderful idea to remove fat from the body
. Liposuction can be very effective as a body-trimming tool, but it doesn't always go perfectly. Depending on the natural elasticity of the skin of the affected area, some people have extra skin that is left drooping or bumpy. Although it may be of no medical concern, it is an unsightly complication of the procedure.
Usually considered to be non-invasive, liposuction is a surgery that usually leaves no trace behind. The incisions through which the fat is removed are made as small as possible, and most scars heal within a few months.
But the scars are not the whole story. The elasticity of the skin is largely outside of the control of the surgeon, and sometimes skin is not able to heal properly over the affected area.
Liposuction involves literally sucking fat cells out of the body through a hollow tube called a cannula. Where the cells have been removed, there is an empty spot.
Ideally, after liposuction the incisions will heal up nicely and the skin will firm up over the empty spot. When this happens, the recipient of the surgery looks thinner and fitter and the affected area is more sculpted.
Occasionally, the skin is not able to firm up over the empty spot, and this can be problematic in several ways. The excessive skin can be hanging or dimpled and in some cases is extremely obvious. In other cases, irregularities of the skin can be seen but are not particularly noticeable.
It can happen for several reasons. Sometimes the surgeon makes mistakes, removing fat unevenly, leaving too much in some spots and taking too much in others. This can be because of inexperience or carelessness. It can happen, too, if the surgeon is not careful with the amount of fat being removed. Taking out too much fat is asking too much from the skin.
Unfortunately, skin irregularities can occur even when the surgeon is careful and makes no mistakes. Some people have skin that is simply not very elastic and is not be able to heal and firm up after liposuction.
Age may have something to do with skin elasticity. The younger a person is, the more naturally elastic their skin tends to be. It is good to be aware that even some people in their twenties or thirties do not have very elastic skin.
As unsightly as skin irregularities are, they are not life-threatening or dangerous in any way. In some cases, plastic surgery may be able to correct the problem, but in other cases, little or nothing can be done.
For everyone, it is a good idea find an experienced and careful surgeon to perform the liposuction. This inevitably lessens the possibility that complications such as these will occur.
