Sleep Better With A Natural Approach To Insomnia
What are the things that prevent you from sleeping at night
? Maybe your mind is racing with all the events of the day. Are you anxious that you won't have enough time to do everything that has to be done the next day? Are you looking at a tight deadline? If any of this sounds familiar, perhaps trying a natural approach to insomnia will help you overcome these barriers to a restful night's sleep. Here are some of the ways you can deal with the problem of sleeplessness without resorting to medication.
Enjoying a mug of herbal tea before bedtime is a great way to relax your body and mind. There are a number of herbs which are natural sedatives, including mint, lemon balm and chamomile. You can get these at most health stores and brew yourself a soothing cup of tea before turning in at night. Or you may prefer warm milk, a time honored sleep aid that works even better with some honey added to it.
One more herb that's helpful as a tranquilizer is lavender. Get some lavender essential oil and place several drops on your pillow before bed to help you slip off to dreamland.
While herbs can be highly beneficial sleep aids, there are other strategies that can help you get a deep, restful sleep. For example, don't watch TV in bed; it's actually more stimulating than it is calming. Reading a book can help some people calm down enough to fall off to sleep - particularly if it's a boring one!
You should definitely avoid taking a nap during the daytime, as this will disrupt your normal sleep patterns at night. Cut out caffeine from your diet, completely if you can, and definitely in the hours prior to bedtime. While an alcoholic beverage might help you get to sleep faster to start with, it's going to disrupt your sleep patterns throughout the night and wake you up, so keep away from it entirely.
Something as simple as your mattress could be preventing you from getting the restful sleep you need. An old, lumpy mattress isn't conducive to comfortable sleep, which means you should think about getting a new one. At the least, get a new mattress cover that's adequately padded.
Meditation is frequently recommended as an effective strategy to relax your mind and body before going to bed. All you have to do is sit comfortably in a quiet spot for 15 minutes or so and focus on something that calms you, like a mental picture or a particular word or phrase. If your anxious thoughts attempt to interrupt, simply dismiss them and return to your calm center. Many people also find that soft music or listening to the restful sounds of nature can soothe the mind and prepare it for a good night's sleep.
