Sleep Deprivation Symptoms

Sleep deprivation is very dangerous. Having a good night sleep is your key to a healthy body and emotional vitality. This is the main reason why we need to have enough sleep everyday. According Phyllis C. Zee, MD, PhD, professor of neurology and director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Sleep is important for mental function: alertness, memory consolidation, mood regulation, and physical health. Too few hours of sleep or poor sleep could pave the way to a myriad of emotional and physical problems, from diabetes to obesity. In fact in a study conducted by their team, data shows that with sleep loss, there are changes in the way the body handles glucose, which could lead to a state of insulin resistance (pre-diabetes).

Additional evidence also shows that lack of sleep alters appetite regulation, which may lead to overeating or food choices that can also contribute to obesity. Thus it is important for every individual to value their sleep pattern. The amount of sleep you need to stay healthy, alert, and active depends on your age and often varies from one person to another (most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep per night).

The amount of sleep needed varies among individuals, but the data supports an average of seven to eight hours, supported by Dr Zee. Chronically lower than six hours or more than nine hours in adults has been associated with poorer cardiometabolic health.

It is important to understand the right amount of sleep an individual needs to have to avoid sleep deprivation at various stages of their life:

Infants that are younger than 11 months: needs 14 to 15 hours of sleep per day

Toddlers: needs 12 to 14 hours of sleep

Preschoolers: needs 11 to 13 hours of sleep

Children: needs 10 to 11 hours of sleep

Adults: needs 7 to 8 hours of sleep (adolescents need a bit more)

Older adults: needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep

Getting the right amount of sleep is not just about feeling good, it is important to your physical, mental and emotional health. When you become sleep deprived over a period of time, the affects permeate every aspect of your life.
