Sleep Tight: Do Not Let The Bed Bugs Bite

Sound the alarm

Sound the alarm. The redcoats are coming; the redcoats are coming. This has nothing to do with Paul Revere's famous midnight ride announcing the invasion of the English army. It's a warning about the return of the pesky bed bugs, which had been eradicated in the United States in the mid 1900s.

They have a lot of different nicknames. Beside redcoats, they are referred to as, mahogany flat, crimson ramblers, heavy dragon, wall louse & chinche. Their formal, scientific name is cimex lectularius, but most people simply say, bed bugs, since they tend to feed at night and find you when you are in bed.

They feed on the blood of warm blooded animals, but their favorites are humans, bats and poultry. Unlike some parasites, that are too small to see and that live within your skin, these bugs are small but visible, and they are usually on you, just long enough to get their fill of your blood, which is about five minutes.

You might hear individuals say that the reason for their reemergence is the banning of DDT in 1972, but the argument does not stand up to scrutiny. For one thing, why did it take about 25 years from the time it was banned for them to reappear?

Besides, bed bugs develop resistance to insecticides and DDT is no exception. In fact that is happening today in other nations. Contemporary studies done in Africa are showing the effect of DDT is to make them more active.

If you left your home for a year due to infestation, even if they had not reproduced, the same ones could be waiting for you when you got back. That is how long they can go without feeding. The symptoms they bring differ from person to person. Some people itch horribly, but others, not so much. Some people complain of bites, although about half the time, they only feed, and do no extra biting. If you do feel itchy, it is an allergy your body has to the saliva.

A bed bug infestation can be psychologically traumatic for many people, sometimes bringing about depression. In severe and prolonged bout, it has been known to lead to refractory delusional parasitosis, where the individual thinks she is seeing and feeling them everywhere. She may become unable to function at tasks.

Bed bugs have been found in 5 star hotels and in the nicest condominiums in New York City's upper east side. Sometimes furniture needs to be thrown out to get rid of them. That is a good reason to never buy used furniture.
