Sleepers sofas have been used for many years. Known by several different terms over time, they have evolved from the heavy, usually uncomfortable beds from the 1950's to the lightweight convertible sofas that are seen everywhere today. They have been called hide-a-beds, sofa sleepers, sleeper sofas, convertible beds, and futons.

Though it has different names and is available in different sizes, this very versatile piece of furniture offers something that is very important in the lives of many people. That "something" is a piece of furniture that does double duty. During the day it offers seating for family members or guests. At night it turns into a bed for overnight guests.

They can also be used by people who have only one bedroom or do not have enough room in their homes for a guest room. With a sofa sleeper they do not have to put their children out of their rooms or send their guest to a hotel. Now they have a bed for their guests without having to move anything or anyone around.

In the past, these sofas were not considered to be very comfortable, and they were quite heavy, which made it difficult to put them into place as beds. Now, there are so many different types of sleepers sofas that it pays to look into purchasing one of these. This is true especially if you have frequent overnight guests but no real place to put them.

The comfort of these sleepers has vastly improved throughout the years. Now there are actual futons that boast quality mattresses that act as both sofas when seating is needed and beds when needed for overnight guests. The comfort is not the only thing that has improved about sofa sleepers. They now come in sizes of twin or single, double and queen to fit the needs of everyone.
