Sleeping Bag Review: High Peak Mt. Rainier 20
TheMt. Rainier series of sleeping bags from High Peak features an ultra-windproof and waterproof shell and is packed with features to protect you from the elements on your next backcountry adventure. High Peak is not one of the more well-known gear manufacturers, but judging by the performance of theMt. Rainier 20 bag we recently tested, they wont be flying under the radar for long.
The Mt. Rainier features anAMPHIBIA 3000 PU exterior shell, which High Peak states is waterproof to over10,000mm, ultra-windproof, but still quite breathable, thin and flexible. Our testers did note a fairly high noise factor, however. The AMPHIBIA shell is also mated to anInvista Thermolite Quallo layer for insulation. The unit we tested in weather conditions and temperatures down to the mid-teens Fahrenheit was High Peak's 20-degree Mt. Rainier, and never did we feel cold during use. We were also impressed at the breathability of the bag, as we know from experience that when it comes to sleeping bags, there's a fine line between a nice warm sack and a bag that feels like a sweat lodge!
The Mt. Rainier's feature set includes 2 versions with right- and left-side zippers so that two bags can be zippered together, as well as velcro closures at the top opening and a cinch cord for a secure closure when the temps really dip. The Mt. Rainier also comes with a durable and effective compression sack which packs the bag down to a 14 x 7.5 diameter profile. The Mt. Rainier 20 in the regular length (86) tips the scales at 3.7lbs. not a featherweight, but not a load considering the hefty performance of this bag.
Overall, we were thoroughly impressed with the performance of the High Peak Mt. Ranier 20-degree bag even in temps down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. It was also easy to pack up and compresses to a minimal size. You can certainly find lighter bags, but if you don't want to sacrifice features or warmth, the Mt. Rainier from High Peak is a sure bet.
