Many hardware replacements can be done in a Do-It-Yourself manner in the span of an afternoon. It is far cheaper than needing to buy another door and track because the old one broke off the rail and smashed on the patio.

Inspect your sliding door and the mechanisms for it regularly. The optimal time would be at the end of winter and at the end of summer. That will largely depend on the climate of your area. Aim for the end of any dormant seasons or seasons where the door sees a lot of activity for your area. Look for damage, wear, or grind marks that may indicate rubbing. The door lock should operate smoothly from locking to unlocking.

A lock that is under pressure is a detriment to your door and home. It typically indicates the door is askew on its rail or there is an angular difference somewhere. This is bad for a number of reasons. Primarily; it really impedes the ability for easy operation of the door in an emergency. One does not want to have to attempt to navigate the nuances of making their door work if a house fire breaks out. The second consideration is security. A lock that is under pressure is much easier to force open. The longer it stays that way, the weaker it will be against any real force applied to it.

These things are all simple conditions to look out for. In most cases, you will be able to tell when it is time to perform maintenance or replace your sliding door hardware by how hard the door is to operate. Draftiness around your sliding door can also be remedied easily by keeping a close eye on the weather stripping around the door and how it wears. Installing some new pieces of weather stripping could potentially save additional money on your energy bills and improve the comfort of your residence.
