Almost everybody has heard a story about someone who could not get a sofa into their apartment or down into the basement

As you can see above there is a considerable gap between the 66" of seating space for the couch and the 44" of seating space for the love seat. Smaller size couches, sometimes called Apartment sofas, fit into that in-between gap that is larger than a love seat but smaller than a full-size sofa.In Europe most furniture, including sofas or couches is built on a smaller scale than American furniture and can be more suitable for the smaller rooms that more people are living in today. Often made in the Far East they are shipped flat in containers to minimize shipping costs.Most RTA (Ready to Assemble) sofas are usually designed to be sold at low prices. Unfortunately, the quality level is also low. There is also a limited number of styles and an even more limited selection of fabrics.

Mid-priced American furniture is typically far sturdier and more comfortable. There is also the problem of assembly which can take between 1 and 2 hours for most of these products.Only recently have a few American manufacturers recognized the potential demand of customers requiring better quality small sofas or couches.It is possible now to find moderately priced, high quality custom-built couches between 66" and 78"in length that have seating space between the arms of 54" - 60".These custom-built small, apartment-size couches can come in dozens of different fabrics and can be specially designed to fit through narrow doorways and staircases.Even though they are custom built to your specifications, they can be built and shipped in 4 weeks or less and cost less than $1000.These custom built small sofas are not the same as the plywood or particle board framed Chinese-made products. These new RTA sofas are built with quality materials like kiln-dried solid hardwood frames and High Resilence foam or down-blend cushions. They are built for long-term durability.In addition, they are not stamped out on a mass-production line by the cheap imports. Instead, they are bench-made one at a time the way good quality upholstered furniture should be.A tight doorway, stairwell or hall is no longer a reason to have to choose cheap furniture. It is possible now to buy a high quality custom-built ready to assemble sofa in smaller sizes.
