Choosing a small dog requires just as much thought as buying one of their bigger brothers. Generally, any dog that has a weight less than 22 pounds or height less than 16 inches falls under the category of small dog breeds. Before getting one of these little creatures, buyers need to decide whether they want a furry dog or a hairless dog. The furry ones score high on a cuteness level and they also shed a lot of hair. Owners who do not want to waste their time on vacuuming their carpets can get small dogs that shed no hair. The dogs also vary in terms of intelligence and the ability to understand human commands. Breeds like the Pomeranian and the Pug are known for their friendliness towards kids. The Poodle is the beauty queen among the small dog category. It is active and intelligent, and is a darling of dog shows around the world. It is also not uncommon to find this dog in the arms of many a jet setting socialite.

Although these dogs are small in size, they seem to be very aware of their own looks and feel the need to be constantly pampered. One of these compact size pups that surprise everyone with their aggression is the tiny Chihuahua. In fact, a Puerto Rican Chihuahua holds the record at seven ounces for being the smallest dog in the world. But despite the obvious drawback in size, these dogs are known for barking at other dogs and nipping at small children. They can be loud, demanding and difficult to manage. But even they are known to endear themselves to their owners, and believe it or not, even cuddle with the occasional cat. Small dog breeds normally do not make very good guard dogs. They are too small to attack an intruder and are not scary enough to intimidate anybody. However, if the bark of the small dog is loud enough, then they might be able to make a good watch dog. Some dogs might even have behavioral problems like not listening to their owner or barking excessively; however, proper training can cure these faults.

Not many people can resist the charms of a Boston terrier, a Pug or a Pomeranian. They are lovable in nature, generally pleasant and always ready to please their owners. Small dog breeds make the ideal companion and the perfect pet to carry home.
