Brenda, 17, met with an accident when she was 13 years old and in the attempt of

saving her two front teeth, she had braces for two years and even tried several other methods. However, her teeth were removed when it was determined that they could not be saved long-term. Hence, she went for dental implant and several months later, she was able to smile again.

So, what is dental implant?

Dental implant is a procedure of replacing damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth by means of implanting new titanium teeth root in candidate's jawbone surgically before placing the artificial teeth. Unlike the conventional dentures and bridges, dental implant is far more effective and much more convenient, besides being able to stabilize loose full dentures and makes your teeth to appear natural.

Pre-decision: Are you suitable for dental implant?

Not all methods are suitable for everyone. If you are considering dental implants, the dentist will need to review your dental and medical history thoroughly. Your jawbone will also be evaluated. In general, people who are suitable for dental implants have adequate bone level and bone density; and are not prone to infection.

The surgical procedure

Local anaesthetic will be administered to the patient, numbing the area of the implant. Some surgeons will use sedative to calm the patients before the numbing process.

After the anaesthetic is received, an incision is made on the gum where the implant is to be implanted, thus revealing the jawbone. A socket is then made in the jawbone to anchor the titanium root. This will provide a solid foundation for the artificial teeth. Following the insertion of the root into the jawbone, there is a healing period, usually between two to four months. During the healing period, your jawbone grows tightly, integrated with the root. Next, an abutment or healing cap is then place on top of the implant.

In the last phase, an impression is made of your implant to make a suitable prosthesis, which will be attached to the implant.

After surgical

After the implant, check-up will be done regularly to monitor patients' condition. Maintenance is also important. Candidate must practice aural hygiene; brushing and flossing regularly.
