I think of myself as pretty savvy when it comes to my business and the industry that I'm in. I also employ several individuals who are extremely intelligent and experts in areas where I may be weak. I have always tried to make a habit of surrounding myself with people that can complement my weakness and together we create synergy. Therefore I feel very confident in my staff and our product. That being said I had an experience yesterday I have to talk about. I feel I learned a very valuable lesson.
I met with a group of individuals who claimed to be experts in the same field as my company and I. One of these individuals was very much an A-type personality, spoke very quickly, made brash comments and handled himself in an arrogant manor. He has been able to accomplish a great deal in his business life and did desire some respect in his own right. However, he took the next few minutes to explain why my product would not work and how I needed his product to correct my product's errors. I listened, gave my opinion, and tried to explain what I understood and how our product does work and works very well.
The next 40 minutes he gave a very convincing presentation that was full of statements like, "trust me, this is my business" and "No, your wrong, and I am right". By the time I was done I was questioning what I had been taught and was feeling a little discouraged.
I called my engineers and spoke with them. They began to help me feel a bit better and I decided to go directly to the source Google. Most of what we were going back and forth about was how Google works, and how to utilize Google the best you can with out getting in trouble or doing things Google disapproves of. Everything I had been taught by my engineers and everything else I had heard or read went against what this individual was telling me.
I spent the next 12 hours disconnected from my phone and engaged with Google and their Webmaster Tools. I wanted to know what they thought about the topics of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Personal Branding, Web Presence, Link Backs and Article Marketing.
I discovered that not only do my engineers and I know what we are talking about, but also this individual was engaging in a full on smoke and mirrors sales pitch. I discovered that Google gives a great deal of information regarding SEO, Personal Branding, Web Presence, Link Backs and Article Marketing; and better yet you can discover if you are engaging in activities that Google likes or dislikes.
I felt much better the next morning as I was assured that my company was engaging in activities that are not only standard practice, but precisely in line with what Google likes to see. I also discovered that the individual I spoke to is doing quit the opposite. Once again, knowing the facts and getting them from a reputable and reliable source is extremely important.
