Smokers, Dont Let Good Health Go Up In Smoke
One would think that a habit that causes or contributes to almost half a million
deaths each year wouldnt have much popularity, but smoking still has its grip on millions of people around the world. A new report from the Surgeon General finds that just a single cigarette can damage ones health. Smokers who are seeking health insurance in Baltimore will find that they will pay higher premiums for their nicotine habit, due to the increased risk of death and other diseases such as high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. Quitting the habit can be extremely difficult, but worth it considering the following reasons:
Premature death. In the U.S. smoking is the number-one cause of preventable death and disease, and statistics show that a staggering 50 percent of all long-term smokers will die from smoking-related disease.
Reduced lung efficiency. Smoking causes a deficiency in the bodys ability to oxygenate the blood because sticky, black tar accumulates in the lungs. This makes it harder for smokers to breathe, and increases the likelihood they will develop a painful chronic smokers coughthe bodys attempt to rid itself of the increased amount of phlegm.
Foul, lingering odors. Smokers often chew gum or mints to mask the bad breath that goes hand in hand with smoking, but it is impossible to eliminate the smell completely. Further, that stale smoke smell tends to permeate ones clothing and hairit can even seep into the walls and carpet if smokers light up at home, in the car, or at work.
Accelerated aging. Yellow teeth and nails and wrinkled skin (particularly grooves etched around the mouth) are telltale signs of smokers. Doctors say accelerated aging is caused when smoke limits the bodys ability to repair environmental damage.
Social unacceptance. Many people refuse to date smokers, saying they find the smell, the threat of
secondhand smoke, the infertility issues that smoking causes for both men and women, and the increased chance of losing their partner to an early death as deal-breakers in a relationship.
On the bright side, for those who decide to kick the habit, lung function and blood circulation can show improvement soon after that last cigarette is extinguished, according to the National Cancer Institute. Ex-smokers will also see an improvement in their walletsstarting with their premiums for
health insurance in Baltimore, as smoking status is a major factor for ratesas well as the huge savings simply from not purchasing cigarettes (which, over 50 years, could amount to nearly $165,000).
