So You Want To Grow A Garden

Let"s face it "" food prices are continuing to go up

, the world"s people population is growing but the world is not thereby creating shortages. We now have large population areas that are literally starving for lack of food. There are a lot of factors that come into play when one considers the food chain: weather, condition of the soil and proper soil management, water supply, wars, pests and diseases, logistics just to name a few. Even with the best farming practices throughout the world it is becoming increasingly more difficult to feed the world. So, what about you "" what can you gain from growing your own garden? First, it can put fresh food on your table; secondly, it was done cheaper than purchasing it; third, you can learn proper canning techniques and store your abundance for future use; and fourth, you can have satisfaction in having taken part in what was done. Gardening can be as big or small as you want it, it might be flower boxes on a window sill or a five acre field that is left to your imagination.

So, what are the requirements here? You will need good seed, good soil, fertilizer (you will need to be careful here because fertilizer is expensive), the correct planting season for the crop, some form of pest control, gardening tools, knowledge of what you are doing and labor on your or someone"s part. For the seed, fertilizer, pest control chemicals and tools you will need to shop around the farm and garden centers for the best prices. The soil part is different "" you will need to contact your county agricultural center to have soil samples taken or if it is a small garden you are considering you can just purchase potting soil to use. Now comes the knowledge base "" not all vegetables are planted the same and what is meant by this is time and preparation. Some are planted early in the planting season and some later in the season, the soil may need different preparation depending on the particular vegetable, fertilizer requirements will vary "" so care must be given here in order to be successful. Water supply is important too especially for a medium to large gardens because Mother Nature can be fickle when it comes to raining on schedule so some form of irrigation needs to be thought out. Now as to what has been presented so far don"t let this scare or deter you because with a good knowledge base you can have the fun, satisfaction and savings from growing your own garden.
