So you want to Marry a Russian Woman

Many intelligent western men have decided to marry a Russian woman

. It's the way forward they say. But what does the process actually entail? Find out from a man who's been there and done it.

Marrying a Russian girl and settling in the UK, from my experience, involved a simple process that many commentators have over engineered. I found the process straightforward and transparent. Yes it involved filling in a couple of long forms, and using your head a bit in relation to the answers you put into the forms but I personally found it no more daunting than applying for a mortgage. Of course it was a much more significant event than applying for a mortgage, in fact it was probably singularly the most important event of my life, but all in all considering the results (being allowed to live with the woman you love) it's a walk in the park.

When applying for a fiance visa/ permanent residency, the authorities do pry into your life a little; they want to know that you are a real person, you are involved in a real relationship and that you can support your wife to be. In my case it was the UK authorities and they demanded a lot of paperwork from me. This included mortgage statements, passport, utility bills, bank statements or pay slips, government authority documents, official company documents (if you are self employed) and probably quite a few other documents that I just can't recall at the time of writing.

Occasionally they come back to you requesting something else. In my case it was a mundane document in relation to something of which they had already proof. They just hadn't checked the documents I originally gave them carefully enough. Also, you don't have to produce pay slips, tax returns and bank statements-probably just one of these will do.

Keep records or documentation of when you first met your fiance face to face. Photographs with dates on them are great proof of a relationship having taken place, as are to a lesser extent restaurant receipts, photocopies of last year's plane tickets to Moscow or your hotel bill. Email contact is also good as emails have dates.

Again officials don't stipulate that you need all of the above, but the more evidence and documentation that you attach to your application the more genuine your case will appear. Again, if they come back wanting more detail, just give it to them. You have to bear in mind that there are many non genuine cases of those who are simply seeking asylum.

You'll need to have been going out with each other for a while- 2 years in my opinion seems to be a magic number for a credible relationship to want to move on to the next step of marriage. During this time border officials may expect you to have visited each other 2-4 times. For example, perhaps you had your first date on a weekend in Moscow. Then she visited you for a couple of weeks in UK. Then she came back again for 6 months whilst you got to know each other for real... I'd say that would be the minimum. In my case I think there was another 6 month period thrown in when we lived together and it was 4 times in all over a couple of years or so.

The better your girlfriend's English, the better her chances are of obtaining entry to countries like the UK and theUS.

It also helps if your fiance has a job. Girls from Russia with steady jobs are in my opinion, much more likely to be allowed to visit you in the UK, never mind marry you at the other end of the relationship. Additionally if you can provide evidence that she'll be able to find employment easily in the UK I'd say that would be the icing on the cake in regards to your application.
