Social Media: Evolving Human Interaction
Most people who use social networking sites will have one of "those" friends; the friend who constantly updates his profile page
. You, along with everyone else on his friends list, know every little humdrum detail about his life, from the color of his socks to what he had for dinner. Sometimes the frequent updates are entertaining, but more often than not they're insufferable. It can quite often seem that social networking sites give us nothing more than unimportant detail. Even so, such sites aren't just for the people who share too much information.
Social media has really taken off in recent years, and people are increasingly interacting online. Sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Google+ make it easy for people to contact and stay in touch with friends who they haven't spoken to in years. Social media has also made it easier for distant family members to keep in contact. Before the Internet, you would need to develop photos and then send them through the mail, taking days to organize and arrive. Even with email, the process took time, as you would need to first add each recipient to the email. With social media sites, photos can be shared easily with all your friends and family. The added advantage of social media is that you choose how often and to what degree you want to interact.
Social media is fabulous for helping us find new and exciting businesses. It's easy for businesses to promote themselves on social media sites. A growing number of businesses are following their customers to Facebook, Twitter and Google+. As users we get to see what our favorite companies and products are up to. We often get exclusive coupons, advance notice of new products and the down low on upcoming sales. It's smart for businesses because social media is where the customers are. Showing up on our newsfeed every day or week keeps their product and business fresh in our minds.
Social media has enabled businesses to innovate in the way they interact with their customers. It has never been as easy as it is now for businesses and their customers to communicate on a personal level. Social media parties, real-time question and answer sessions and discussion forums are all effective and meaningful ways for businesses to communicate and develop relationships with us.
Your world is a lot bigger because of social media. It's simple to find people or groups who share your interests, hobbies, aspirations, or attitude towards life. Social networking sites unite people from across the world.
Social media has also opened up possibilities for networking, something that's even more vital in today's competitive business environment. Networking in the past could be an awkward business. You might exchange business cards with someone at a conference and then never get around to calling them. Or you might make the call, starting the conversation clumsily with: "I met you once at...", then face the embarrassment of the person you're calling having no clue who you are. Sending a friend request on a networking site is straightforward. No awkward phone calls to face. Networking can be immediate; you can simply add someone to your network straight from your smartphone, even before the conference is finished.
Above all, social media is convenient. It's accessible from smartphones, computers and tablets. It enables us to stay in touch with all the different groups of people in our life, from family and friends to business acquaintances. We can interact as much or as little as we like, and interactions can often be less stressful than face-to-face exchanges.
Social media has altered the way that people interact. Yes, you may have to put up with the frequent postings from "that" friend about his mealtimes, but this minor irritation is counter-balanced against the many benefits that social media brings to the ways we interact. There's never been a better or easier time to get in touch.
