Social Media Introduction

What do you know of this word called "Social Media"

? Most of you, myself included, would relate it to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, am I right?

Actually, "social media" is more than just these 2 social networking sites. In fact, it has been around for a long time (it is just that we do not realize it). In the past, social media would consist of things such as the BBS (known as the "Bulletin Board Systems") and chat rooms such as the IRC (known as the Internet Relay Chat), etc.

What you will be discovering in this post is a brief introduction to social media - Such as the different types, as well as a brief description of what each of them is...

There are many different types of social media - But there are 3 of them that we come across almost every single day in our lives, and they are:

1. Discussion Sites

Discussion sites can be in a forum of a forum, or discussion board. You can find forums and discussion boards created in virtually any niche - With each of them having discussions on topics in that particular niche.

The use of these discussion sites are so widespread nowadays that even academic institutions, and workplaces, are also having one in place that fellow students (in each academic institution) and fellow colleagues (in each respective workplace) can come together to share information and help one another.

2. Content Sharing Sites

These content sharing sites can come in a form of blogs (such as Blogger and WordPress), Web 2.0 platforms (such as Squidoo and Hubpages, where you create single page sites to share information on a particular topic), photo sharing sites (such as Flickr, where you can share photos you have taken with everyone from all over the world, and allowing people to use these photos in their websites), micro-blogging platforms (such as Twitter), video sharing sites (such as YouTube), and much, much more.

Unlike the past, where if you have something to share and want to create your own website, you need to create it from scratch, right now, you can share anything you want online very easily - Simply by making use of these content sharing websites.

The best part about these sites are that not only are a majority of them free for you to sign up, the entire signup process is a breeze as well (you can get yourself signed up in most of the content sharing sites within 5 minutes and start contributing).

3. Review Sites

These are sites where it contains user reviews about particular products/services - The most common being Amazon (not only is it a global shopping place, but it is also a great place to contribute, as well as to read up reviews on particular products).

These sites are getting increasingly popular with the Internet community as people, before they commit themselves to a particular product/service, would want to check out reviews about it before buying.

I hope that, with this post, you now have a better knowledge of what social media is about.
