Social Media Marketing is NOT a blog
Have you ever been in a marketing meeting where the idea of Social Media Marketing is raised and someone at the table pipes up and says "we are going to do social media; we are going to be starting a blog". This is by far the most popular "Social Media" misconception.
While a blog is one small component of a strong overall Social Media strategy, it in no way fulfills what is needed for an organization to have a strong Social Media Marketing presence.
Social Media Marketing accomplishes four primary goals: Increases online awareness and brand recognition. Increases accessibility and communications with clients, prospects and employees. Increases search engine rankings on Google, Bing and Yahoo. Enhances professional credibility and supports other advertising initiatives.
In order to execute an effective Social Media Marketing Campaign you must first develop a strategy. What is the purpose of your campaign? To increase awareness of your corporate identity or do you want to run a themed marketing campaign? What will be the call to action? Do you want the reader who lands on your article or page to follow it, go to your website or email you? What sites will be included in the campaign? A strong campaign should include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, two to three blogs AND supplemental sites that include microblogs, bookmarking sites, online directories, article and video sharing sites and more.
Next you will have to ensure that you consistently release robust, quality, optimized content across your Social Media Campaign on a consistent basis if you want it to index on the Search Engines.
Also, don't be afraid to mix things up. If your organization is an innovator or leader in a particular industry, consider other Social Media sites that get great rankings like Wikipedia. If you are a retail establishment you may want to consider incorporating review and mapping sites into your campaign and so on.
Many organizations turn to organizations who specialize in Social Media to manage their campaigns. This has come out of an increased awareness of how important Social Media is as a sales and communications tool. Don't be the person at the boardroom table who is suggesting that a blog is a Social Media solution and visit www.assureassess.com/socialmedia.
