Social Media's use in the business world will grow tremendously this year (2010) Last week I laughed at a truck stop where I was invited to be a member of their Face Book was getting a cup of coffee last night at a truck stop and was shocked to see an ad inviting me to join the companies Facebook fan page. It's hard to believe that up to about 18 months ago the thought of using social media to promote B2B was just beyond most executives minds. Blame it on a MBA, no offense MBA guys and gals. Sure it was great to promote to consumers a burger special or a florist shop but to use it B2B was a Star Trek expedition.

Most companies did not really understand why social media was important to their marketing and branding image. This year the embrace of social media to promote themselves will take off in a magnificent way. And the ones that do it the best will reap rewards in their bottom lines. Pepsi for the first time in 23 years Pepsi scrapped advertising at the Super Bowl and spent their 20 million on "the refresh project". A giant social media experiment. While the jury is still in deliberation so far so good. One thing is for sure the merging and leaning towards social media is upon us and the obvious trend going forward.

B2B companies can build strong and deeper relationships with their "customers".And who are their customers? Vendors, potential clients, and management and employees should all be seen as users of Social Media and really customers. Each has unique needs and problems and with the new technology they can easily be at least known about in an open environment. Hiring or training someone who can make this happen should be a priority this year because major companies like Dell and Lego for instance, have already proven it can mean millions to your bottom line.
