Social Work Skills Workbook Review

The Social Work Skill Workbook is definitely a text which I have found to be useful. It gives me some help as a social worker and is useful for anyone in an undergrad bsw program or a grad social work school. I appreciate that there is a lot on interactions with others and that there are exercises. Barry Cournoyer is the author and has covered material from

It has also helped me to organize my skills in such a way where I know I will be much more effective. I see it available on kindle, so that is a nice way to absorb the information and have it handy. The hard cover edition is quite expensive. I like that there is so much discussion on talking and listening. Another author I enjoy who writes well on this is Mortimer Adler.

Social work skills workbook goes into detail on professionalism, assessment, reflective listening and many important areas. It is practical as well as in-depth which is a rare combination. Action steps are given as well as a good discussion on termination with a client. The author covers being a social worker in various settings so this is helpful with all types of populations of clients.

Each chapter covers a different important topic which I find to be very refreshing, without a stuffy quality. I like the fact that it addresses ethics and goes into detail about it, so as to provide a comprehensive and thorough understanding of the subject matter. All in all this book is a great learning resource for those who are still in the process of earning their degree or as a handbook for those in practice. It provides a lot of useful information in a straightforward format that really appeals to me. It is also important to have peer supervision in order to avoid burnout and help process the issues that arise in dealing with difficult client situations.
