Software industry is a big industry. It evolves since last 50 years so it is still young industry therefore it has many problems yet to solve and software reliability is one of them. In this industry you ask a developer what he or she is doing then the answer might be that debugging. This is because majority of the developers spend their most of the time debugging the software application. This might pose a question mark on the software reliability.
In case of other industry the product is develop right for the first time but in case of software application development this in not true. Programmers develop software but it has to test frequently in order to make it error free. This debugging part cannot be eliminated at all. It is estimated that software error cost US industry nearly $60 billion a year. Majority of the business and consumer use bad software without a question this affect them badly.
Software applications development companies spend big bulk of money on the software quality assurance or on the software testers but cannot try to eliminate the coding errors from the beginning or in the development stage. They have not proven methodology to stop erroneous code right from the development stage. We know process improvement methods include ISO 9001 and SEI-CMM but they are remains on papers only and in practice nothing is found improved!
Development dynamics focuses on improving development group behavior. Much software created today is still developed in either Waterfall or Iterative methods which were early or popular attempts to bring order to the actual process of software development. More recent examples are extreme and Agile programming. These methods speed up the software production by shortening the development cycle. This is done through many numerous small application iterations that focus only on well-defined customer specifications.
This indicates that when development group focus on particular target they achieves better results. Here testing is integrated into the production process. Unfortunately, error detection is still a large factor in such models. Testing is conducted to look for bugs in order to fix them, but nothing is done to alter the process that allowed those bugs to be created in the first place.
In short, we have to focused on error prevention right from the beginning and this must be done during the development stage means writing the code which is clean and neat and error free as well.
