Solving the Whining Puppy Problem
So you got a puppy and you think it's so adorable but its whining is keeping you awake all night
. Well, I'm sure that many people who get a puppy have that same complaint and can't stand the whining puppy. The fact is, however, that puppies are like little babies and just as a baby cries when it's taken away from its mother, a puppy is the same thing. The puppy has been taken away from its mother and has been placed in completely strange surroundings, hence the whining. When a puppy is whining, it is basically crying because it's missing its mother.
Though the whining will usually soon subside when you give your puppy the love it needs and the nurturing it requires. The puppy will eventually feel that you are its mother and will attach to you as you are its mother. You need to know that domesticated dogs are perpetual children and need care. They need to be fed, walked, and also attention. In some cases, however, the whining can be prolonged and this can be a problem. In some cases, the whining puppy may not just be a problem with its new owners, but with the neighbors also. This is when training is imperative.
There are many possible reasons why a puppy is whining and what is causing the whining is persistent. In most cases the whining puppy wants attention and if you give it too much attention every time it whines, it will know that it's whining will get the desired result. Sometimes it might be a good idea to keep a whining puppy isolated in a room for a few hours to train the puppy that sometimes it will be alone and eventually the puppy will get used to that and stop whining. This may take a couple of days, especially in the beginning, but if the puppy realizes that its whining is not getting the desired result, it will get accustomed to this and will learn that this will be acceptable.
The key to this is that you need to get the puppy accustomed to the fact that it's not going to get accustomed to getting everything it wants when it whines, much like a child throwing a temper tantrum when it wants something. Like you don't give a child who throws a temper tantrum what it wants, the same thing is the case with a whining puppy. Let it whine and don't pay attention to it so it can get accustomed that whining is not a desired behavior and it will not get the desired results.
There may be other reasons why your puppy is whining. This could be a sign that the puppy may have some discomfort. Whining is how a puppy cries. Early in life a puppy will whine to get the attention it needs or if it's hungry, thirsty, or needs something else. For this reason it is always important to make sure that your puppy has ample food and water in its dishes and you should get them accustomed to a specific feeding time. Dogs are very intelligent animals and believe it or not, they can tell time. I have seen this over and over again in my own experience with my dogs. For example, my border collie/black lab mix knows exactly that around four o'clock in the afternoon, she gets her pig's ear. This is why feeding times are so important to be made on a regular basis at the same time period of the day.
Temperature and climate conditions can also contribute to why your puppy whining. If your puppy is either too cold or too hot, it will not be happy and will whine until conditions improve. This is why it is important for your puppy to have a nice warm room and dry bedding. Furthermore, get your puppy used to walking. Puppies, and dogs all need exercise and many whining puppies who grow up to become annoying barking dogs usually lack attention and exercise. Keep this in mind when you are training your puppy not to whine.
A dog can be a wonderful pet and can be a companion that can be with you for 14 to 15 years or sometimes even more, so you need to train it properly when it's young to avoid annoying behavioral problems in the future.
