Some Air Pollution Facts That You Need To Know
Air pollution is an increasing cause of health concerns among people today
. While some people might experience temporary effects, some of the effects can be long-term in nature. Some of the temporary effects of air pollution are irritated eyes and throat and infections like pneumonia, while the effects of long-term exposure to pollution are lung cancer, kidney damage and respiratory problems to name a few.
Some air pollution facts
People are not aware of a lot of air pollution facts. There are a number of things which cause air pollution. While the main causes of air pollution are pollutants released from coal-burning power plants, there are also other sources which contribute to the rise in air pollution. For example, the increasing levels of carbon monoxide released in the air as a result of fuel combustion from motor vehicles. The burning of fossil fuels releases pollutants in the air which contribute to a rise in air pollution. Deforestation is another major cause of air pollution.
There are different types of air pollution which have different effects on the planet and ultimately on us. One of the most dangerous effects is the greenhouse effect, which is responsible for holes in the ozone layer. Other effects are acid rain and smog which are results of toxic gases being released in the air. Acid rain is caused when sulfuric acid, which is an air pollutant, combines with water present in air or when it combines with snow acidifying it. Pollutants released from industrial and automobile emissions can have chemical reactions and cause smog which is basically a mixture of smoke and air.
Every time we breathe we release carbon dioxide in the air. Sulfur dioxide was also released in the air by volcanoes in the past. However it is not the gases alone but the increasing amounts in which they are released, which is a major cause for concern. The increasing levels of air pollutants in the air coupled with deforestation, has resulted in global warming. Greenhouse gases leads to global warming, which is an increase of the Earth"s surface air temperature.
Most people assume that they know all air pollution facts. They believe it exists only outside their home, but this is not true. Air pollution exists even inside your home. In fact, research has shown that people are most likely to suffer from health concerns caused as a result of indoor air pollution. This is because we spend most of our time indoors either at home or working in offices, which are confined areas. Indoor air pollution is a result of smoking, and various vapors which are released from different cooking appliances and from building materials.
Every human being contributes towards air pollution in one way or the other. This is termed as your individual carbon footprint. There are many ways to decrease your carbon footprint, and one of the best ways is by recycling and using public transport.
