There are a lot of questions that a person newly diagnosed with cancer may have

. Hopefully some of the questions will be about cancer wigs. Cancer wigs are made specifically for patients that are facing total hair loss from undergoing chemotherapy.

Most people begin to lose their hair slowly. Sometimes it falls out in large handfuls; other times strands here and there. But with most of the chemotherapy drugs used today, the hair will fall out. Usually it can take about two weeks for this to happen. But all people are different, so it may not be the same for everyone. Some forms of chemotherapy do not lead to hair loss. Radiation may only affect the spot or spots on the head where the radiation is concentrated. But generally, chemotherapy affects all of the bodys cells and this causes the hair follicle to simply stop doing its job and the hair falls out.

A wig can do several things for the patient. It will protect the head from the sun and also keep the head warm. It may also be needed to keep up their self confidence in that they have a head of hair like every one else.

Wigs come in several sizes, including petite. After all not every one has the same head size. Some wigs have a Velcro strip so it can be adjusted to fit the head better. The wig should fit securely on the head but not be too tight. The head has enough to worry about let alone having a wig that is too tight. Some people may choose to wear a soft yet snug cap under the wig. It could be of nylon or cotton. It would protect the scalp from being irritated by the wig. Some newer wigs are stretchy and have more movement in them.

All wigs will need some care. After all it may be worn seven days a week for six months or more. Synthetic material wigs may not have a lot of styling options but they may be able to be changed a bit. If the patient chooses a wig with a headband to hide the natural hair line, then they will have to consider always wearing a headband. This may not always be a comfortable or realistic option. A wig needs to be brushed out. It may require some hairspray after it has been washed. It may need some styling. A synthetic wig tends to dry faster than one of natural hair. But heat should not be used on a synthetic wig as it may destroy the style or even worse.

The wearer may choose not to wear it every day. There are some options like a headscarf or hat with some bangs or side pieces of hair attached with Velcro. This can give the head a breather. Again a cotton cap may be worn under the hat or scarf.

There are some options out there for cancer patients and the hair loss will not last forever.
