Some Extremely Minor Drawbacks with 4G in Rochester
There is currently no internet connection that will solve all of your problems without having at least one drawback
. A lot of connections try to achieve that status, but only 4G has come so close. It offers a fast, reliable, portable, and affordable connection in Rochester that you really can't go wrong signing up for. Unfortunately, that doesn't change the fact that there are a few drawbacks to keep in mind.
Before understanding the drawbacks, you'll need just a little background information on the connection itself. 4G is basically the next generation of cellular technology that can be used as a high-speed broadband connection in cities that have the infrastructure in place. Because it is a wireless technology, customers can opt to use it in a mobile capacity. They can plug a USB modem or PC card into their portable computing device and get access to the internet anywhere in the city-wide coverage area. You could browse from your friends house, chat on Facebook at your favorite restaurant, or even stream movies to your computer during your commute to and from work.
Since the service is fast and affordable, it's hard to believe that there would be any drawbacks, but there are a couple. The first drawback has to do with the fact that 4G is not available everywhere just yet. If you tend to stay within the city of Rochester, you won't have any problems at all. But if you sometimes make your way outside of the coverage area, you could lose service. In any event, the farther away you get from the center of the service the weaker the signal will become. A weaker signal could result in slower performance, though even the weakest signal will be light years beyond dial-up. Fortunately, there are some plans available that account for people that tend to roam outside of the coverage area. In such cases, your service can revert back to the older but more widespread 3G network. It will be slower, but at least you won't be left in the dark. You'll still be able to do some light browsing, check your email, chat with friends, and use Facebook without any issues. Streaming movies or downloading large files could prove problematic though.
It's also important to know that your 4G signal could end up being weak if your line of sight with the sky is obstructed by certain materials. In fact, prevailing weather conditions can have an effect as well. Also, being in a "dead zone" can end up being a problem too, though this doesn't tend to happen all that often. Most of Rochester is covered and covered well, but don't be surprised if once in a while you encounter some troublesome spots. Try moving around a bit as even minor adjustments in your position can make a big difference sometimes.
One more minor drawback to be aware of is that although 4G is a wireless connection, plugging in a USB modem can prove to be a minor annoyance since it will stick out a bit from your laptop. This particular point is pretty minor, but just something to be aware of.
