For some people the idea of gold detecting is quite attractive and in actual fact it is something that anybody can really do if they have the correct equipment. If you are wise it is not even going to cost you a lot of money to get yourself started however it is important that you do have some understanding of what you are doing but you can pick up a lot of this through the internet.

However the most important thing is the metal detector and you are going to need quite a good one at least. Never just go for the cheapest detector which is aimed more as one for a child but at the same time there is no need to go for the most expensive out there.

For your metal detector it is important that you spend time talking to the company you are buying it from and do listen to the advice that they give you as they shall tell you which one you are best to buy. Just make sure that you let them know you wish to look for gold as they can then let you know which detectors are more suited for that than normal treasure hunting.

You do need to do some homework before you go out trying to detect for gold as it is not exactly just found in any old place. You need to see where it has previously been found either in areas of old gold mines or where nuggets have been found in streams.

Do be aware that depending on where you are you might actually need to get a license before you can detect as you are prospecting for gold. You can find this out quickly by just calling the local governing body and asking them and at least this is going to stop you from being arrested by the police.

If you go to a place where gold was previously mined then start by going to their waste mounds as there is an increased chance that they could have missed small pieces of gold when they were digging out the initial mine. Again your research and a keen eye should be able to pinpoint these locations for you.

The last thing to consider is the type of ground you are detecting on as gold is heavy so it does actually sink to the bottom. You are therefore best to detect close to bedrock because your detector is going to have a limit to which it can detect so if it is too deep you could quite easily miss it.
