Some Important Information On Inflammation

Old age and disease-related symptoms now have a widely recognized culprit

. To fight these unwanted conditions we have learned to target treatment toward the one thing that is responsible for most of them... inflammation. That is the reason for anti-inflammatory medicine. They used to be called just plain pain pills but now we get to call them that other thing, because if you take away the inflammation, you take away the pain.

The De Medicina written by Cornelius Celsus (Aulus Aurelius) in Rome around 30 A.D. gives the four classical signs of inflammation. They are rubor (redness), calor (warmth), tumor (swelling), and dolor (pain). We readily notice these signs as acute reactions we get from irritation, injury, and infection. Inflammation is also involved in chronic conditions such as allergies, asthma, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, and Alzheimer's. Further, inflammation fuels the fatalities of blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, and cancer.

Inflammation is our body's reaction to foreign substances in our body in the attempt to get rid of them. You get an increase of white blood cells and blood flow to the affected tissues which is why you feel warmth, see redness, and get swelling, which restricts movement if it's in the joint. The nerves in the area are consequently stimulated to cause pain. Inflammation as a natural body response is a good thing, but what has gone whack is the large amounts of toxins our body has to deal with, keeping us inflamed. Our immune system is overtaxed by pollution, junk food, stress, lack of exercise, and lack of sleep.

Those are conditions that can be dealt with by bringing your attention to the importance of adapting a healthy lifestyle, such as making sure your water is filtered and your food is wholesome, making time for exercise and getting an adequate amount of sleep. These things should also bust any stress you have but if not, throw in some meditation, deep breathing, stretching, and a relaxing hobby.

Fresh fruits and vegetables have a definite role in eliminating free radicals that cause inflammation. Their ability to do so can even be measured with a score called Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC). On the other end are fat-fried fast foods, meats preserved with nitrites, sweetened pastries and soft drinks, all of which you should strive to avoid.

Another bad thing about eating processed food is that they have no enzymes to break themselves down in your stomach. Not only will that food give you toxins for your white blood cells to fend off, but also those white blood cells get used to digest the food. Your white blood cells are loaded with enzymes. Let them use the enzymes as a vital part of your immune system to eat up viruses, bacteria, and parasites... not your food! If you are not eating all raw food, then consider taking an enzyme supplement containing bromelain from pineapples and papain from papayas.

The importance of enzymes in dousing inflammation cannot be over-emphasized. As a protection mechanism, your body creates a fibrous protein in your blood called fibrin. It builds to a mesh at a wound to seal it and stop blood loss. When the job is done an enzyme called plasmin is released to break up the fibrin and the inflammation.

Fibrin also gives a protective coating to your blood vessels, but the fibrin also has to be broken down daily with this enzyme; otherwise the walls of your vessels thicken with fibrin mesh, trapping cholesterol to turn into arterial plaque inflammation, and you end up with poor blood circulation and much worse.

Balance is what makes everything work smoothly. The regular wear and tear of life and the healing and recuperation seems to go in its cycle. Real trouble starts when things start going on overload for too long. Inflammation plays an important role in healing, but the role chronic inflammation plays in disease has only just been discovered recently. And so, the anti-aging fight has turned to the fight against inflammation.
