Some Info On Rechargeable Batteries And An Alternative
What is considered a good rechargeable battery for everyday use? There are a couple types we can use but which one may be better? Below is a brief rundown on some of these.
We have the NiCad battery which is the older type rechargeable, they are considered obsolete by many for a reason. NiCad's have fewer recharge cycles, low capacity and die quickly. They also suffer from memory effect which makes them not receive a full charge.
On the other hand you have the Nickel Metal Hydride or NiMh, which does not suffer from memory effect and have a higher capacity. These are good all around batteries but they do not store the energy for long. They may loose their power after a few months if not used. Of course recharging them will make them usable again.
There is the rechargeable alkaline or the heavy duty general purpose batteries that will also loose their capacity each time they are charged. Good thing is they have a high capacity.
A good alternative if you do not want to recharge is the standard alkaline and the oxyride battery. The newer oxyride will last much longer than the alkaline's and make a good choice. For devices that will drain your batteries fast the oxyride would be the best bet, this would apply to digital cameras and such.
If you buy something that uses the NiMh batteries you may be better off. You should be able to have a longer life span with these batteries because the memory effect will not rob its ability to get a full charge. The oxyride battery is great because of its long life and the ability to keep devices like cameras going for a longer period of time.
