Physical Tip #1 -- Relax Your Body


Bad vocal quality can be brought on by tension, especially when you are singing live in front of an audience. Before a live performance, try to find a technique to unwind and relax. Try stretching to relax the body. An exercise called the "Rag Doll" can help you prepare and get rid of body tension. Standing with your feet hip-width apart, gently bend forward from your hips. Allow your head, upper body and arms to just relax loosely like a rag doll. Shake your head and arms for a few seconds and then return to dangling. Repeat this for as long as you need. This will allow the tension in your body to go away.

Be sure that you are using good posture and pitch placement. In addition, make sure your breathing promotes good breath support. Check the facial and neck areas for any signs of leftover tension. Gently massage these areas to relax them and promote good sound when you sing. It's just not as fun singing when you know you don't sound your best.

Physical Tip #3 -- Resistance Train Or Do Aerobics

It's harder to find time to exercise when your performance schedule is really heavy. Make it a habit to always fit in an exercise program. Three times a week is recommended for working out your body. When touring, ask if there are any facilities available in the hotel you are staying at. If not, walking is a good alternative. If the weather is poor, try walking around inside the hotel. Always use the stairs and not the elevator. Riding the elevator won't give you much of a workout.

Do something that you enjoy tremendously. There is no need to throw away a lot of money on this. Treat yourself to a delicious dessert or read an enticing novel. A jacuzzi feels fantastic after you have worked out.
