Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics | Goyte Lyrics

The Somebody That I Used to Know lyrics speak to the residual dreadful feelings that come with breaking up

. The frontman for Goyte (pronounced Gaw-Tee-Aye) sings, concisely describing the agony and frustration that often comes post-break up as a loved one suddenly becomes simply somebody that I used to know.

Despite the tragic nature of the Somebody I Used to Know lyrics, written by Goyte, the song itself still keeps an upbeat rhythm, thanks to Goytes sampling of Saville by Luis Bonfa. The song also features female New Zealand vocalist Kimbra.

After fifteen weeks on the charts, Somebody That I Used to Know, off Goytes record Making Mirrors, reached #1. After toppling fun.s We Are Young, this it marked the first time one alternative song immediately topped another in the #1 spot.

The song was originally a viral sensation, thanks to the songs music video, which received a whooping 170 million views on Youtube and was parodied by Saturday Night Live. The video depicts Goytes bare torso being painted in stop-motion animation before a modernist backdrop. Some critics have notes Goytes call-back to dAngelos video Untitled (How Does it Feel?).

The song also made appearances on the TV show Glee and American Idol, giving the songs popularity even further momentum.

The songs success has also helped Kimbras career. Kimbra signed with Warner Bros. to release her debut EP, which hit the Top 30 on the Heatseakers Albums chart.

Upon listening to the album Making Mirrors, the listener realizes that Goyte finds it difficult to stick to one genre. While the hit track Somebody That I Used to Know has a more delicate pop-indie feel, other tracks vary in genre. I Feel Better, for instance, is infected with Motown hooks, while Eye Wide Open features New Wave, and State of the Art dub reggae.

Originally born in Belgium, Wouter Wally De Backer moved to Australia at a very young age and grew up there. He displayed a passion and skill set for music very early in his childhood. He would also often use his tape recorder to record sound bites from his favorite childhood TV shows and play them back (perhaps as a premonition for his adult sampling).

He recorded his first album, Boardface in 2001, and released it in 2003. The mainly positive reviews from this short-selling record encouraged him to produce more, and at around this time he formed the band The Basics (which is currently on hold). His second solo album, Like Drawing Blood, was named such he was experiencing creative difficulties in his life while moving from place to place and feeling displaced.

Like Drawing Blood exposed listeners to his first (modest) hit, Hearts a Mess. With his third record, Making Mirrors, he would slowly but surely achieve worldwide success, particularly with his hit single Somebody That I Used to Know.
