Sony Ericsson Xperia Play : Latest Smartphones With Great Features

Sony has dominated the games console industry since it launched its first PlayStation console in 1995. Since then the company has launched a number of additional consoles including handheld devices but has not yet made any serious attempt to bring their gaming expertise to their partnership with Swedish phone manufacturer Ericsson.

The Xperia Play is the result of this effort, and has been referred to in many circles as the PlayStation Phone or the PSP Phone. The decision to introduce this now is no doubt partly due to the increase in popularity in gaming on Apple and Android phones, the introduction of Xbox LIVE through Windows Phone 7 and the increasing sophistication in hardware and software support for mobile game developers.

The Sony Ericsson partnership has been going for many years now but it is not really any surprise that PlayStation support is only just being introduced. The Xperia Play comes with scores of games titles available at launch with the promise of many more to be released within the coming months. This is unlikely to be the last PlayStation phone and so many games developers will be willing to develop for it and the Xperia Play has the benefit over Xbox LIVE supporting Windows Phones in the fact that they can provide full console games and not just water down touchscreen variants.

The reason for this is that the Xperia Play features something that none of the Windows Phone 7 handsets possess a console control pad. This is revealed through a sliding mechanism where you would expect to find a QWERTY keyboard but instead are greeted with a directional pad and the iconic cross, square, circle and triangle.

Because of this you are not just limited to touchscreen games and can enjoy the Xperia Play like a real handheld console. The Xperia Play does come with touchscreen support as well, with a 4" LED-backlit LCD screen offering fantastic visual quality and multitouch support. The Xperia Play runs on Android Gingerbread and Sony Ericsson's Timescape interface which offers excellent messaging and social networking support.

The Android OS means that you are not just limited to games on the Play, but are provided with all the same great functionality that you would find on any other Android phone. As a Sony Ericsson phone the Play comes with some great multimedia support including good playback for music and video, as well as streaming video content from online through services such as YouTube and the Play also comes with Flash support.

The Xperia Play also comes with a nice 5 megapixel camera that includes an LED flash and WVGA video recording. Photos and videos can be easily shared online through services such as Facebook and Picasa and the Xperia Play comes with support for up to 32GB microSD cards with an 8GB card included. If you get tired of the PlayStation games available you can always get some other gaming titles thanks to support for Android Market. The Xperia Play is certainly the ultimate phone for gamers and has the benefit of Android and a control pad giving it an edge over its Xbox LIVE enabled competitors.
