Soothe Your Body with Aromatherapy
With all the contemporary trappings and amenities of today, it is ironic that we end up more pressured and exhausted. We have a family to run, children to raise, and even a profession to manage. It is no wonder that at the end of the day, we suddenly feel a hardness in our necks, an ache in our backs, or a pain in our legs.
It is then all the more ironic that, in this age of hi-tech and scientific progress, ancient natural therapies still persist to offer respite to our weary bodies. Even doctors and physical therapists find these unconventional means advisable in general for the healing of body aches and pains, but with some precautions.
Aromatherapy
This olden practice of using blended essential oils from aromatic plants to relieve both the body and mind is another testimony to the therapeutic power of plants. However, essential oils are highly concentrated and should be watered down in carrier oils, such as jojoba or sweet almond. Luckily, health and beauty shops vend oils that are already mixed so that they can be utilized without the need to measure and put together.
Aromatherapy together with a massage maximizes its relaxing benefits. It deals with both the physical and mental aches. Among the most effective oils used for physical aches and pains are:
1. Chamomile is a mild oil recommended for relaxing muscular aches and headaches.
2. Lavander oil has a powerful floral scent. Used in massage, it can relieve overtaxed muscles and headaches.
3. Peppermint is a stimulating minty oil used to relieve tired feet.
4. Marjoram is a strong herb used to soothe stiff muscles.
5. Clary sage has a warm aroma used for abdominal and menstrual aches, and muscular pains.
6. Rosemary and juniper is suggested for those experiencing back pains, sprains, muscle aches, tensed muscles and even mild arthrities.
7. Eucalyptus can calm exhausted and overworked muscles.
Aromatherapy oils can be used through breathing in, hot compresses, baths or massage. But first, do a skin test on the inside of the wrist and wait for 12 to 24 hours to observe if it will give you any irritation. Please be reminded that not all oils agree with everybody.
Precautions:
1. Follow instructions. It is advisable that when using full strength oils, instructions for the amount used in massage and baths should be followed with care. Some oils can actually be toxic in big amounts.
2. Stay away from using essential oils if you are epileptic or pregnant.
3. Do not drink the oils.
