Sopranos Characters - Adriana La Cerva

Adriana La Cerva is the girlfriend and later fiancee of the character Christopher Moltisanti on the HBO television program The Sopranos. She appears from the first through the fifth seasons of the show, when she is killed, though she appears in a couple of dream sequences later. Her character is the most important "civilian" to be killed on the show, and she is portrayed as someone who never quite realizes what she has gotten into, and is easily manipulated by the FBI as a result.

Adriana La Cerva is from a mob family. She is the niece of the mob boss, Jackie Aprile, and both her uncle Ritchie and her cousin Jackie Jr. are involved in the mafia. As a result, the mob world as a whole never appears especially strange to her. She is used to the idea that people around her will steal or that they will extort each other for money. However, this is in many ways her problem. She treats the mob as normal when it is anything but normal.

So, when she becomes involved with Christopher Moltisanti, she is largely oblivious to his more serious crimes, such as murder. Instead, she treats him like a thief who works for a living, and thinks of his life in the mafia as basically his job. As a result, she is genuinely unaware of the kind of danger that he poses to her. He beats her up on more than one occasion, and then eventually turns her into Tony, who kills her.

The mafia is in many ways able to take advantage of Adriana's strange sense that life in the mob is normal. She genuinely has no idea how much trouble she would get into for some of the things she does. When they threaten to search her club for drugs, which would probably net nothing, she agrees to become a co-operator, but later she seems to have no idea just how much trouble she would be in for helping to dispose of a body. As a result, the FBI is able to easily scare her into doing what they want.

She further fails to understand just how dangerous her fiance is. When she goes to Christopher with the idea of entering the witness protection program, she honestly believes he is considering it. However, Christopher simply can't bring himself to kill Adriana himself, and instead turns to Tony. His entering the program was never a real possibility, but she had no idea.

Adriana is a character who represents the average civilian in the middle of a mob universe. The constant crime around her confuses her as to how serious everything is around her, and she is suddenly murdered when she makes a wrong move, even though she didn't see it coming.
