The Soviet Union was in existence for seventy years
, from 1917 to 1991. During that time, the country was socialist and everything, including the creation of art was under control of the government. It has been said that during the first eleven years from the creation of the Soviet Union, artists were free to express themselves tried to create a distinctive Soviet art style. As time went on though, society in general became more repressed, and many forms of art were banned. In their place came the Soviet poster meant to guide the Soviet people's way of thinking. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, greater interest in what was produced in the Soviet Union during that time has risen. It is possible to buy rare Soviet art and posters online.
When talking about Soviet art, it is important to note that there were some well-known and government approved artists who flourished during the Soviet era. Those artists include people like Alexander Deyneka, Yuri Pimenov, and Geli Korzhev. Deyneka's works include a mosaic that covers the ceiling of a metro station in Moscow as well as a 1928 painting called "The Defence of Petrograd." This type of artist did not create the Soviet poster. Rather, Pimenov is the founder of a group called the Society of Easel Painters.
He created paintings which referenced changes in Moscow from the 1930's through the 1960's. Korzhev is known as one of the most influential artists who depicted the realism of his time. When you are talking about work done by any of these three artists, you are talking about museum quality fine art that can fetch thousands if not millions of dollars at auction.
