Spain- Menorca

Far exceeded by the evident attractions of the Mallorca or Ibitza Islands

, this is a more quiet and peaceful place consisting of about 702 square kilometers; however, it is slowly gaining popularity. Declared a biosphere reserve, it has a slightly hilly landscape. A long history of occupations by numerous series of invaders, and almost a whole century of British domination have endowed this island with a special atmosphere and a different cuisine. Here you can try African kouskous with British puddings, and also visit Mao, the place where French mayonnaise was made for the first time.

A great holiday destination

Mao, the capital of this wonderful island, can be found at 5 kilometers into the interior; it is one of the few Mediterranean ports. Life here spins around its many restaurants and coffee shops in Plaza del Ejercito"; the shops are concentrated on the streets here, but also may be found in Plaza de Espana". The old houses bear signs of British occupation between 1713 and 1802. In the town called Es Castell, 3 kilometers further, Fort Marlborought offers you an image of old times. Even more memorable are the 500 megalithic monuments, scattered all over Menorca Island. There are three main types: talayots (conical mounds of stone), taules (constructions with the shape of the letter T" )and navetes (high gutters that look like a boat). These monuments date from the second millennium BC and used to be altars or funerary monuments.

Two impressive places

On Menorca island there are two impressive places, that bring tourists to visit them annually. The first is the habitat in Trepuc, with a taul high of about 5 meters, located immediately at the exit of the island's capital. The second important place is Naveta des Tudons, located at 5 kilometers from Ciutadella. Naveta des Tudons is the old capital of Menorca, an absolutely charming town.

The beach in Menorca

The beaches on the North coast of the island have reddish sand and pebbles. The South beaches, that attract the most tourists, have a finer sand. Although the south is more populated in terms of beaches, you still may enjoy a bit of solitude at Son Saura"or Cala Mitjana" .

A small inconvenience

The only disadvantage of this beautiful island is the wind, so prepare for it. Take appropriate clothing because the wind blows frequently and forcefully on this Spanish island. Enjoy all these beauty and have a nice holiday in Menorca!
