Spell Binding Magic Shows On Tv

Magic shows on TV have become so popular that they have started edging towards prime time and the viewership is increasing day by day

. Its probably something to do about the basically curious nature of humans who somehow fall for deception. Magic (derived from the Greek word magika), it appears, is as old as mankind. After all, we love playing small tricks on each other just to see the expression of astonishment, sometimes extending to looks of incredulity on the faces of our fellow beings. Calling a bluff and falling for it seem to come naturally for us, though the former needs extensive research and endless hours of practice.

Robert-Houdin, a Frenchman, is considered to be the father of modern magic. He was the first person to start using all types of equipment in his shows. Science and Technology played an important part in his shows as he used his skills and dexterity as a clockmaker and invented gadgets that were extensively used. His famous trick called the Light and Heavy Chest was devised based on Electromagnetism. He baffled the viewers by inviting one of them to lift his small money box, which he could do with ease. But the volunteer huffed and puffed and gave up as the box was held down by a magnet secretly activated by Houdin. And Cardini, one of the greatest magicians, further perfected the art by making lit pipes and cigarettes appear from nowhere.

The amazing thing today is that the magicians have all become hi-tech and are not camera shy, and mind you no sleight of hand can trick the camera. The popular magic show on TV in the 70s was The Magician, starring Bill Bixby who played Anthony Tony Blake, a generous playboy who used his magical skills to solve difficult crimes. As there was a real life magician with that name, the screen name was changed to Anthony Dorian due to the conflict. Some of the most popular shows on cable services like ATT U Verse Internet are The Worlds Greatest Magic, The Worlds Most Dangerous Magic, Trick or Treat, Street Magic, Mystery Magical Special, Masters of Illusion, David Blaine: Street Magic to name a few.

Blaine, with his unique tricks, was able to mesmerize the viewers. His most popular trick that has baffled viewers is the Balducci Levitation which has to be seen to be believed. However, this one too is just a trick. It is achieved by a combination of subtle acting and misdirection. The performer appears to undergo immense physical strain, sometimes contorting his face to accomplish the desired effect. Researchers have noticed that people rarely take breaks while watching magic shows. That is the power of illusion at work.

The commercials have a field day when magic shows are aired as most of the annoying fillers are watched along with the main program and ratings always show an upward trend on the graphs. That way, the sponsors are happy and so are the TV companies with revenues soaring.

Magic shows on the small screen are here to stay. The shows have become hi-tech with special effects and sound and light that are used to get the desired effect that can hold millions of viewers glued to their seats. The magicians need to take extra effort to conceal their sleight of hand while on TV as compared to stage shows as they are under the watchful eyes of the camera which captures all that is happening, not an easy job by any standards. As long as mystery shrouds the shows, the performances will keep going and so will the wily magicians. The show goes on...
