The country has 1,192 islands formed from coral that make up the 26 atolls that pan out towards the northeast. The word atoll itself is taken from the Maldivian language Divehi and is now used the world over to describe an island made of coral. The best way to visit the smaller islands is to hire a speedboat, while some of the larger islands have landing facilities for sea planes. Bear in mind though, while the larger islands may have the best resorts and restaurants, the smaller islands make up for it in privacy and untouched beauty.
The sea surrounding the islands is filled with a variety of marine life and colorful fish light up the ocean like a myriad of glittering lights. Snorkelling and diving are therefore extremely popular among visitors. In addition, other water-sports such as jet skiing, water skiing and surfing can be enjoyed on different islands.
