Sport Specific Pilates

The basis is that it is exercise to correct/restore posture and thus optimize functionality of the body in movement, breathing and awareness

. It creates balanced, functional bodies with long, strong, lean muscles.Top sports people require optimal function from their bodies, which is produced by correct posture and breathing techniques and a strong mind body connection. Therefore it"s not much of a surprise that athletes have incorporated its practices into their often already rigorous training schedules and routines.

Dancers were the first athletes to pick up the practice en maze. Many of the disciplines first "disciples" were in fact dancers. For dancers, especially ballerinas, posture is the obvious prerequisite. Their focus is to be as strong as they are flexible in their correct posture. Too much strength can easily end in muscle tears and too much flexibility can cause joint issues. Therefore the goal is balance.

Many top golfers have taken up the exercise in the past decade. The focus being on mobility (especially rotation), strength and precision through the drive (the better your posture the better both strength, precision and reflex), and longevity of the body - limiting career-ending injuries (per-hab). Even "Sunday golfers" will find that length and precision of their drive will improve with continued Pilate spractice.

Many high impact sports people are also seeking out the exercise as more and more research shows the importance of core strength, core stability and core initiation for all sports and sports injury prevention.

It"s an exercise that works directly and profusely with the core on all levels, focusing on core strength, core stability and core initiation.

Core strength is built with exercises that strengthen the abdominal, and you should be able to activate your core throughout each exercise in a session.

Core stability is improved by stabilizing the pelvis with the lower abdominal "against" other body movements. For example, if you are riding a bike and your pelvis dips side to side as you pedal, you will have more overall movement, creating less stability, less strength potential and using more energy. If you can stabilize the pelvis against the cycling movement of the legs, you will have stability, strength and more potential energy.

Core initiation is the most overlooked but most important awareness for athletes to work on building. And it"s relatively easy to train in. Before each movement the core must be activated (pull your low abs in before you move). Eventually the body will learn to do this without you having to think about it, creating a situation where your core will be active anytime you move, write or even talk. This means a lot more core strength and stability. Another benefit of core initiation is the reduction of injury risk. If the core is active it is much harder to injure your back and you are much more stable.

Whatever your sport and whatever your level, Pilates can certainly improve your performance and enjoyment, and reduce your risk of injury, keeping you in the game you love longer.
