The Rams (1-7) snapped their 17-game losing streak and avoided matching their worst start in franchise history. Detroit (1-6) spent their bye week trying to figure out how to fix their many problems.

They fell for a trick play when St. Louis holder Donnie Jones took the snap and flipped it to kicker Josh Brown, who connected with Daniel Fells for a 36-yard touchdown pass. The Rams took the lead 10-2. Brown wasn't surprised how badly the Lions fell for the play. He said he watched tape of how Detroit "came every single time when they were set up that way. It was ours for the taking."

Detroit coach Jim Schwartz stated that he expected Brown to kick the ball. The coach added that if St. Louis missed the kick, Detroit had good field position to do something of their own. The Lions scored their only points on offense early in the fourth quarter when Matthew Stafford took off for a four-yard TD run. The quarterback then made the two-point conversion by throwing a pass to tie the game 10-all. Detroit was credited with a safety when James Butler picked off a pass in the end zone, returned it past the goal line then went back and was tackled. The Lions have won only two of their last 31 games and are 32-103 since 2001.

Detroit center Dominic Raiola expressed his frustration by shouting at fans who taunted Stafford. Raiola told the press he understands the fans' frustration, but when they attack one of his teammates, he's going to stand up for him. Stafford returned to the lineup after missing two games due to an injured right knee. The No. 1 pick in the draft did not have much help from his teammates since they dropped several passes. The quarterback also missed standout receiver Calvin Johnson, who's been out because of a right knee injury. It took three-plus quarters before a receiver caught a pass from Stafford. Bryant Johnson was able to reel in the pass, which set up Stafford's game-tying run.

Stafford finished 14-of-33 for 168 yards with one interception. The Lions' Kevin Smith was bothered by a shoulder injury and was limited to 45 yards rushing. St. Louis quarterback Marc Bulger went 17-of-33 for 176 yards and threw an interception into the arms of defensive end Dewayne White. Bulger had numerous passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. Jackson was St. Louis' only highlight, as he rushed for a season-high 149 yards on 22 carries. The explosive running back also scored the go-ahead TD, which was the Rams' first rushing touchdown of the season. St. Louis saw three of their starters fall to injuries, as TE Randy McMichael (bruised rib), OG Jacob Bell (head), and WR/KR Danny Amendola (head) all left the game.
