Stages Of A Relationship - Can You Save Yours
Just like life, every relationship goes through different stages. This isn'tsomething we tend to think about much, and probably isn't at all on your mind ifyour love is new.
But listen to this advice on relationships. Understanding thestages of a relationship will help you know what's to come and whether you twohave a future.
The first stage, the romance stage, is surely the most exciting. You are justgetting to know each other, and each of you is on your very best behaviorbecause you want to make it work.
In this honeymoon period everything is freshand new and exciting. He or she seems wonderful. You laugh at each other'sjokes, and can see past each other's flaws.
It is usually an exciting, adventurous time. If your relationship has significant problems already, you twoprobably don't belong together.
The next two stages make or break the relationship. Stage two could be called
the power struggle stage.
6 months to a year into a relationship, the newness typically begins to wear offand you start to see each other differently. You realize that this is gettingserious, and look at each other a little more critically.
Each of you wants to be sure that your needs will be met, and you are probablyfinding areas where this isn't happening the way you would like it to. It iscommon to have problems at this stage, so if you are doing so, don't take it asan automatic sign that the relationship is doomed.
Your partner has flaws andfailings. So do you. You need to decide if these are flaws and failings you canlive with. If you can live with these issues, it is time to get to workrepairing your relationship so it has a chance to thrive.
If instead, you start trying to change each other, things don't look so good. You can't build a healthy relationship on a base of making someone else do whatyou want them to do. If you are having problems because you are trying to changeeach other, that's a clear sign that the relationship is in serious danger.
In the third stage, you accept that you can't (or give up trying to) change yourpartner. This is where you need to learn whether you can be content with yourpartner, warts and all, or whether you two should go your separate ways.Problems here probably mean that it is time to move on.
In the final stage, you accept each other and commit yourselves to a long-termrelationship. Problems between you two at this stage can be terrifying, but arealso a call to action. You've both made a major commitment to the relationshipso far, and it is worth a major effort to try and save it.
