Starcraft walkthrough: Setting up a Protoss Base (PC)
Protoss bases are one of the easiest to set up in the game of Starcraft. With a little practise and a good working knowledge a player can quickly set up a well defend base. Protoss also have the most versatile defensive building the Photon Cannon that will target both ground-based and air borne foes.
Like with every race set off your Probes gathering Minerals from the word go. The Protoss have a significant advantage in base building as they can set one Probe to the task of building the entire Protoss base with no problems. Protoss tend to need more vespene gas early on so get that Assimilator up and running as soon as you can. Like with all vespene gas gathering facilities only three or four Probes are needed to operate it efficiently.
The Protoss rely heavily on the positioning of Pylons for future buildings, so build some near the main entrance to your base. This will allow you to create Photon Cannons there once you have a Forge. More Pylons also means you can create more Probes to speed up resource gathering.
Massed up Photon Cannons make a formidable defence but are not indestructible both Terran Seige Tanks and Zerg guardians can outrange them so ensure you have air borne defenders or other units ready to take out these threats. They are also ineffectual against Protoss Carriers as the number of targets created by the Interceptors confuses them.
Next get a Gateway warped in with your building Probe so you can create units. Next warp in a Forge, once this is up and running you can create Photon Cannons. Now start warping in Photon Cannons near the Pylons you created near the entrance of your base. Remember to add in supporting Pylons so your opponent cannot just take these out and de-power the Photon Cannons. This added Pylons of course add to your population limit so are not a waste. Also build Pylons and a few Photon Cannons in spots around your base where the enemy may try and sneak attacks in.
Now concentrate on expanding your tech tree and creating more Gateways and Stargates depending on which units you intend to attack the enemy with. It is also worth researching the upgrades for whichever type of unit you intend to go with. It is also always worth researching the Plasma Shield upgrades at the Forge as this effects every single Protoss unit and building.
