Stari Grad, One of the Oldest Towns in Europe

Stari Grad is a small town on the island of Hvar

. It is situated in the north-western part of the island. The town is located in the protected bay which is the safe shelter for many boaters. Many people visit Stari Grad bay while cruising by the Adriatic coast. The town is surrounded with pine forest which, together with summer breeze, cools the island during the hot summer.

The old part of the town has preserved its original architecture. It is full of narrow streets and small squares. Habitants have renewed the old stone houses. Some of the houses are offered for rent. The houses are decorated in the combination of modern and old style.

The town was known as the Greek Pharos and it is one of the oldest European towns. A trademark of Stari Grad is Tvrdalj Castle. Tvrdalj was a summer residence of Petar Hektorovic. He was a Croatian poet. Tvrdalj is a Renaissance building. The biggest attraction of Tvrdalj is a fresh water fish pool. The town has an amateur theater which is called Petar Hektorovic. The amateur theatrical group nurtures a comedy expression of Petar Hektorovic.

The beachs are rocky, concrete and pebble. The Laterna beach is located hundred meters from the centre of the city. Maslina is situated near the ferry port. Banj is a city beach. Paklena, Baba, Zavala and Zukova are sandy and rocky beaches which are situated on a peninsula Kabal.

The town is perfect for a long walks by the sea. You can enjoy in the scents of the sea and fields of lavender when you walk around the island.

Vineyards and olive-groves have been planted on the fields all around the island. They have remained unchanged since the ancient Greece. Stari Grad Plain was placed on World Heritage List by Unesco in 2008. It is the most fertile and the biggest field on the island. Over hundred of archeological sites were recorded in the area around the field.

Summer in Stari Grad is very vivid. There are many sport and cultural events such as concerts, recitals, entertainment, International Music Summer School and Faros marathon. Faros marathon is a Croatian international championship in long distance swimming.
