Start Finding Money for College Early
Are you worried about your children having enough money for college
? If so, you're like most people with children of any age. Whether you have toddlers, elementary aged children, or seniors in high school, college can weight pretty heavily on your mind. It is, after all, a huge expense. However, in today's world, you know your children will definitely be more successful with a college education. Here are some ways to find money for your children's education as early as possible.
1. Save more! The best thing you can do is start saving
money for college as early as possible. Set up a tax-advantaged education savings account, and have your child's grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other loved ones donate as they wish. A little bit each year can go a long way, even if your child is already in middle school or high school!
2. Start looking for scholarships late in your child's high school career. There are actually many essay and merit based scholarships that your child can look into early in high school. These scholarships give monetary awards that you can contribute to your child's savings account for college.
Late in junior year and early in senior year, the hunt for scholarships should really begin. Look in every place you can think of. Ask the guidance counselor. Get online and look. Look in books at the library. See if your employer offers scholarships to children of employees. Do anything and everything you can to get this free money for your child. Remember to encourage your child to help, too, as he or she will have to do most of the paperwork!
3. Fill out the FAFSA in the spring of your child's senior year. The year before college starts, you have to fill out this form, which can be done online. This will help the federal government get your financial information out to school's your child's interested in and decide how much aid it will offer your family in the form of grants and loans.
Remember to fill out the FAFSA even if your child hasn't decided which school to go to yet. The form can simply be sent to all your prospective schools, and you will get financial aid packages from all of them, which can sway your decision between schools oftentimes. Saving and applying for scholarships should be done early, but the FAFSA is the last and most important thing you can do to get money for college.
