Starting From Scratch - As Paradigms Shift Companies Sometimes Start at Zero
When a paradigm shifts and an old paradigm is replaced by a brand new one the race starts over. Many times an industry leader finds themselves at a distinct disadvantage to a smaller, newer company. The industry leader has invested years of time and money in the old paradigm and every structure and process in the company is built around it. When the shift happens they need to change everything. A new company, on the other hand, has no investment in the old paradigm. All of their processes can be molded around the new paradigm. They can change and mold the company for the new changed landscape.
Every organization needs to set up their internal structure to be able to change. Processes and structures based around a paradigm are important. They keep order and quality in check. Without the processes customer service, quality and just about every other aspect of a company would fall apart. But, keeping theses processes too rigid will be a detriment when change is need in the face of a paradigm shift. Make sure that ideas flow in your organization so that constant change and innovation are possible. When organizations and departments within the organization change frequently to incorporate new ideas they will be better able to change when a giant paradigm shift happens.
The study of other organizations is also important in the face of a paradigm shift. History can teach valuable lessons about how to embrace change and use it to your company's advantage. Smaller, newer companies might have an advantage on you, so the study of other companies in your predicament is invaluable. Preferably, this study is undertaken prior to a paradigm shift so that you are ready to move when needed.
If you are part of a smaller, newer company, not caught in the old paradigm, then there are valuable insights available for you as well. When starting a new organization it's easy to fall back on old paradigms. Your employees were most likely part of old paradigms in the previous employment and standards from inside these industries are easy to replicate. However, the best way is to throw out the old and create your own structure based on the new paradigm that has presented itself. Innovative thinking will be easier for your organization, but you are not immune to falling back on old paradigms and wasting opportunities.
It is inevitable - change will happen. Will your organization become a dinosaur or will it adapt to the new changing world? Whether you are new organization or experienced one, avoiding falling back on old paradigms and adapt your organization to the new landscape.
