Starting a Remote Control Model Hobby

Before you begin your adventure into the world of Remote Control Vehicles, you need to be aware of the differences between RC Toys and Hobby RC Vehicles. Knowing the facts ahead of time will make your experience less intimidating and a lot more fun! Remote control models offer something for everyone.

For the novice, and especially for a child under 12 years old, the less expensive Toy Radio Control Vehicles may prove the best. The Toy Radio Control Vehicles can be found in stores such as Kmart, Target, and Wal-Mart. They have less power and are easy to operate. Once handling skills are mastered, it's time for the transition to the RC hobby vehicles found at hobby shops.

RC hobby vehicles are more expensive and require the operator to have a higher skill level equal to the type of vehicle chosen. The Hobby version of the Radio Control vehicles can be purchased completely assembled, partially assembled, or from scratch. Your choice should match your building skill level rather than price.

Hobby versions are powered by three different power sources. Electric, Nitro fuel and gasoline. The electric powered models can have three different types of battery choices: Nickel cadmium, Nickel metal hydride or Lithium polymer cell batteries. All three types of batteries are rechargeable, (Lithium polymer cells require a specific charger). The Nickel metal hydride battery usually allows the vehicle to run longer between charges, but the Lithium polymer cell is the preferred choice because it can produce more energy.

The second type of power is Nitro fuel. Nitro fuel is made by mixing methanol, nitro methane and synthetic oil and may pose some hazards for the less experienced. The third type fuel is gasoline. The gas vesion runs on a gas/oil mixture similar to the mix used in gas power tools (i.e., chain saw), and lawn mowers.

As you enter into the world of Remote Control vehicles, take your time. Match the right RC Vehicle to the operator. A beginner starting with a RC kit may bcome very discouraged by the time, money and skill level required to opeate the model fully. Likewise, starting with a toy model, can be very boring for a more skilled enthusiastic operator.
